Dosn't a sniper have to factor in earth's rotation on really long distances? If the planet does not rotate, the bullet should miss him if he has the guts to prove his ideas this way.

John Byrne used that principle in explaining his Canadian hero, Weapon Alpha/Guardian's speed.
Quote: Guardian could cause the battle-suit computers to trigger and release gravitons, canceling the Earth's rotation relative to himself, propelling himself forwards at up to about 1000 miles per hour (at the equator). This effect will suspend his positioning relative to the Earth's electromagnetic field while the planet rotated, allowing him to travel West at high speed depending on his latitude positioning.

heh.
That made no sense then, and it still makes no sense now -- but then it was in a comic, where precious little makes sense.
That's also why there's a difference of an hour between flying to and from China (The "experts" are completely wrong on this).
When you're flying against the rotation of the Earth, you actually move slower, because the atmosphere is pushing the other way; when you go with the rotation of the Earth, you go faster, because the "wind" (which is not a wind) is behind you.

Well you know, it goes both way!
It just much simpler to imagine the earth as rotating around the sun to describe the whole universe!
Apart from that tiny detail, it's just as true that the sun is orbiting the earth!

So (for real) an employee came by to ask why the English (and their colonies) still wear white powder wigs in court - and what's up with all the men of distinction wearing them for who knows how long.
The answer . . . and I love it . . . will keep you laughing at this laughable custom of dusty pomposity:

And that's somehow relevant?
In my opinion, "cap in hand" is certainly a better situation then "CLAP in ....".

So I applied for a job working on the Java stack, yea I know, and they came back with a question about how much C++ I've done. Well I used it some 5-10 years ago but not much and never to any great depth. Great, can you fill in this C++ test then...

From an article about Machine Learning*...
[-- Image recognition has gone from spotting when there’s a face in a photograph to coping with everything from text to traffic signals. The ImageNet benchmark tests identifying photos of a thousand objects, like recognizing not only pictures of 150 different dogs but also their breeds. ”You have to distinguish Pembroke Welsh corgis and Cardigan Welsh corgis, one of which has a longer tail,” explains John Platt of MSR. --]
First of all, imagine the people writing these algorithms:
"Let's see, if the tail is long and the dog is approx. this tall, then it must be a Cardigan Welsh corgi."
The Reason for Fear
When the computers decide that the picture you are looking at is a Pembroke because it's tail is shorter, then you don't question it. The computer knows after all. But, what if the corgi's tail was bobbed and it is actually the other type? Well, you just don't question that in the future, because people don't think.
The Phones are the Smart Ones
iPhones are smart and people are dumb (in the future and now).
Now, how about when it is something much more important, like detecting cancer or the face of a criminal.
"Well, we have to put this guy in prison, because the computer told us too."
That's what Gates and Musk fear and they are probably smart.
Gates & Musk know that people don't often think. Instead they just react to their AI.
Smart Phone Minions
Look at how people have become minions to their Smart Phones.

And the problem is that people want to see 'intelligence' where it doesn't exist. It is NOT original thought, it is a formulaic response. I remember being at odds with a visiting lecturer while in college to this same affect.

Tim Carmichael wrote: see 'intelligence' where it doesn't exist. It is NOT original thought, it is a formulaic response
A very good point.
I agree. True intelligence is human. Any algorithm which seems to exhibit intelligence is in fact following some prescripted code, whereas we don't know the source code for humans.
Humans are infinitely creative -- and by that I mean often stupid. But, stupidity can be a form of intelligence. A computer programmed to be intelligent is limited to never having the ability to be stupid and thus humans can create art and beauty and stupidity where a computer never can.
I know my comments are going to bring a lot of response. Humans are better than computers and always will be. Except they are so infinitely stupid.
