Just like my company. R&D may go slooooow without ready access to tools we need. But if it's good for them it's good for me, after all they pay me to work from 9 to 18, not to produce good quality software faster.

This is the 3rd cut[^] in the last 10 months. I'm just waiting for the axe to fall so I can claim my pay-off and bugger-off. Haven't had a pay-rise in 3 years and know I could earn more elsewhere but have been here long enough to make the pay-off reasonably substantial that leaving for another job would almost certainly mean I miss out.

AFAIK it all depends on what's written on the contract. Instead of having well detailed laws and a Collective Contract which is then integrated by the individual contracts (that is the system we have in Italy) in parts allowed by the law, they have fairly detailed individual work contracts. Not fulfilling obligations on a signed contract is thus taken way more seriously than in other legal system, up to meeting with jail time - which for example is a very rare occasion in Italy.

For their UK Staff (not sure about their US based) they offer a reasonably attractive package on the proviso you accept the redundancy and take it no further. Employee protection is quite high over here.

It's a state-by-state thing. Some states (as you would expect, California) have laws pertaining to wrongful dismissal. Most don't.
On the other hand, if you can show some sort of discrimination, you can nail their privates to a splintery board and make them jump to attention - but being of the wrong gender/race/&etc., these pretty much do nothing for me.

They can. The good ones offer severance for the same reasons they offer various other benefits.
