The Electronic Frontier Foundation is bringing light to what it calls a "stupefyingly mundane" patent on e-mail technology, given not to a patent troll hiding in a small office but to one of the world's largest technology corporations. I bet no one has a patent on flint tools. Ogg will be rich!

Seriously, IBM? That company is run by f***tards and idiots. And the person that approved the patent needs to be fired. And the patent itself needs to be invalidated.
How about every time something like this happens, the entity that filed the patent cannot file for new patents for 5 years and needs to pay back any money obtained from the patent through any means, along with a major fine, say 50% of the entities annual income.
Or just destroy software patents once and for all.

A lot of times, bigger companies will patent something just to keep actual trolls from causing a ruckus by taking out a patent and going after deep pockets.

They immediately disclaimed it and set it free[^](.PDF), so it's a tactical move, shoving something sharply up the backsides of patent trolls.
Good on 'em for spending time, effort, and money on that. Lots of kudoses.

They've got a lot more ridiculous patents pending, hopefully to shove the same spike up the patent trolls' backsides -- even if a patent is only pending, the "invention" is locked off.
If that's the case, then it's a great thing they're doing, and they deserve a lot of thanks from a lot of people in computing & IT.

Why don't they set it free to all except those who have a history of patent trolling? Go after them for big bucks...!!!

I see different things in this story...
On one side there is IBM - where probably, the fact of the patent wasn't a in the main stream (or they were not giving it up so easily), but pushed (again probably) by lawyers, themselves not that knowledgeable about history of email and features around it, but felt then need to protect the boss...
On the other hand there is the patent office, getting a large sum of money for do the search and all they do is to run a small software to lookup patent registry by keywords, but never step out to the real world - which actually render all the patenting system to a tool to bully creativity...
In any case, kudos to IBM to show the right way, when it became clear a patent is only for trolling...
