Of course you are right (for the most part). It’s just a hyperbole, like Moore’s law stating that hardware performance grows exponentially. Nothing can grow exponentially in face of physical constraints. It’s just that these flippant statements highlight truths that we sometime forget and software is sometimes bloated.

Where you are unfair is in asking old hardware to perform today’s tasks. Compiling 20000 lines programs was not possible because there were very few 20000 lines programs and most of them were not destined to run on a PC. We had simpler tasks and we were doing those with very limited resources. Sometimes people had to expend a lot of ingenuity to meet these constraints.

A few days ago I was reminded of these “good old days” when I had to go back to TAOCP to investigate an algorithm for evaluating complex polynomials. It is very smart and it saves a few floating point operations. It is also completely insignificant these days Smile | :) If you want to read the details, you can find them here[^]
