changing the default program install location in windows...

Is there a way (programmatically or otherwise) to change the default install location of programs from c:\Program Files to say d:\MyProgramFiles in windows? I 'm aware of registry entry ProgramFilesDir - and that does not work well with windows/IE updates so that is not an option. Any other suggestions would really help. Thank you.

However, some prgrams may need the default path and changing this may interfere in how they work.
