Assuming you know the basics of how to navigate a website - and that's pretty much a given since you found your way here - you don't need general instructions, just a little information.
Codeproject (or CP) is about developers helping developers: we provide information and assistance for free - that doesn't mean we do your homework if you are a student, or your job if you are just feeling lazy! If you show us you tried and got stuck, we're all pretty helpful.
There are three main areas on CP: Articles, Forums, and Quick Answers - and you can find them all via the menu at the top of the screen - just hover your mouse over the name and a drop down will appear allowing you to "narrow down" your focus.
Articles are what the name suggests: "how to do it" instructions mostly with code and pictures to explain a concept, algorithm, or operation. For example this is one of mine explaining how to start thinking about doing a project:
How to Write Code to Solve a Problem, A Beginner's Guide[
^] and this is one talking about what happens behind the scenes of the .NET List collection:
List<T> - Is it really as efficient as you probably think?[
^]. Articles also cover Tips which are a lot smaller and sharper focussed:
Backing up an SQL Database in C#[
^]
Forums are dedicated to a specific subject - there is a C# forum, a VB forum, and similar for all major languages and subjects - you'll find them under "discussions" on the menu.
Quick Answers is a "catch all" area where you can ask a question on anything computer or development related - it's similar to the forums, but it's strictly focussed on a specific problem you might be having and that can be answered in a few paragraphs.
Click around, see what you can find - you are free to post a message to almost anything, but ... there are rules: Spamming == Ban Hammer. Trolling == Ban Hammer. Abuse / abusive language == Ban Hammer. And posting irrelevant material will also be frowned upon! And remember that everybody here (other than the staff) is a volunteer - none of us get paid, and none of us can see your screen, access your HDD, or read your mind; so we only get exactly what you type to work with. Give us nothing to work with, we'll give you nothing useful back! Other than that, welcome aboard - enjoy your stay, there is a heck of a lot you can learn from the site!
