How much free space on your primary drive should be maintained so that Windows works properly?

Some versions of defragmenter require about 15% free space in order to work optimally, so I'd say that's a good indicator of the minimum free space you should have.

However, Windows should work even when you have only a few MB of free space. Still, you risk running into trouble if there's a page file increase or you download/install something. Keep a few GB free space and you should be good.

For Win7 , you should at least leave 4Gb to make it run propely when you have 2GB of RAM , if you have more RAM 4~8 then don't worry :) .
