Mismatch in the Parameter data type of the report and the subreport in Crystal Reports

Hi,

I have a crystal Report in which I need to add the cascading prompts. My crystal report has a sub report where in the value of the "Department" is calculated in the subreport and then displayed in the main report. the same parameter is present in the main report. For the sub report the data type of parameter is Number and in the main report the parameter type is Srting. Without doing the changes the report is working fine. but i'm not able to understand the logic behind different data types for the same report.

I'm new to Crystal Reports so the report ans subreports are not clear to me.
Can anyone help me on this. any kind of help will be great.
