I need to handle data from\to files in java. So which is better to use, XML or dat ?

It all depends on what you need.

Do you need to make it difficult for users to mess around with that data? Then use a binary file or better yet, place it in a database. IF you want human-readable, structured, data, XML is your choice.

Java is capable enough to let you work with either with equal ease.
