I am getting the error "Previous release of Visual Studio 2008" failed. I am getting the same error even after uninstalling all the .Net components including Visual Studio.

That question is off-topic here, you should contact the manufacture of the application. Their IT team would help you in solving the problem.

That's old - and it used to mean that you had a version of Visual Studion 2008 that was pre-SP1.

If you get an error like that, the first thing to do is Google the message:
Google: "Previous release of Visual Studio 2008"[^]
There is a fair amount there, most of which seems to say "leave out Management Tools, Integration Services, and Business Intelligence Development Studio" and it'll work.

Other than that, I suspect that trying the installation of SQL has damaged the VS installation, and uninstalling VS no longer happens cleanly.

I'd suggest that the OS you are running on is kinda old - XP probably, given the age of VS pre SP1 - and you might find it best to reinstall XP or better before installing a newer version of VS (2013 Community edition perhaps?).
