It depends on what your language preference is. Are you a .NET person or a Java person?

I would prefer Mono for Android. That's what I'm doing my research project on is connecting .NET to Android using Mono for Android.

I guess the answer is what's important to you..

Mono costs for a development License
JVM doesn't

You will feel at home with Mono being you are a .NET person
Eclipse will seem odd to start with

I couldn't find many Mono examples
With Java you can find many examples

I could go on, but I guess find out what's important and then look at the options.

In my opinion Java (hence Eclipse) is the natural choice for developing Android applications. Unless you have a large, valuable Mono code base.

Makes sense, a 5. I would only add that a question is not correct. Eclipse cannot be considered as the alternative to platform, as it is the IDE. And I bet it could be used for both target platforms (if it had any sense; maybe for some if does make some sense).
