replacing of text by comparing names of files in a directory

Hi,

I had some files in a folder and some files in another folder I have to compare each file in one folder with each file in another folder and then replace some text with some text in another folder if the name matches.

For Example I had a folder with names dw_add_item, dw_item_list, dw_item_container_list, dw_container_list, etc.. and in another folder I had files like itemcontainermaster, itemlistcontainer, hierlistcontainer, itemcontainerlist etc.. Now I want replace text of itemcontainermaster file with the text in file dw_item_container_list only Here I was using split and storing the strings in an array inorder to get the names of files of first folder and then comparing each name with the another file of second folder.

Can anybody please help me out.

I don't quite understand what the criteria for matching the filenames is. You state in your question "Now I want replace text of itemcontainermaster file with the text in file dw_item_container_list", so how are you matching these filenames?

I am having xsd files in one folder which contains queries in it and another file has controllers in it. I want to place the respective query into respective controller by matching file names. and how I am matching the filenames is what I said above. Is there any other way to match those file names? Can you tell me any other way to do this.

No you still have not explained how you match the filenames. As I said in my previous response, how do you match itemcontainermaster to dw_item_container_list?

Here my question is how to compare those file names and copy the string. I have compare if the words in the source file name matches with the destination file name.

I have to compare the file names and place the text of respective file into respective another file by matching filenames. I don't know how to compare those names.

You'll need to click on Improve Question and show your relevant code so we can see where you are stuck. There's a thousand different ways to do it so we need to see what you have so far. All you need to do is load them into arrays and then loop through and compare.

What is it you are copying? Are you copying the contents of one file to another (File.Copy)? Or do you need to open up the files and manipulate only part of the text inside them? Or are you trying to change the names of the target files?

Which part of the above "pseudo code" are you stuck on?

if the file match that is the part I have struck. I have compare the names of the files and if the name of file1 matches the name of file2 then I have to do something but I have some conditions over there. like I have explained in the example. add_item_list is file I had itemmaster and itemlist then I have to copy the text in itemlist file only. Can you tell me the way how to do that.

Sure. Can you explain to me the rule just in English how the match is to be found?

For example, if itemcontainermaster matches dw_item_container_list

Here are some examples of what the rule might be:

1. Separate file2 into "words" separated by "_". In this example the "words" would be
("DW", "ITEM", "CONTAINER", "LIST").

2. If the first four letters of file1 are the same as the 2nd "word" in file2
-AND-
the third word in file2 is found in file1 starting at position 4

If you are having a hard time explaining how the match is to be found, then please give me an example of at least ten matches, and I will figure out the rule. Then I will give you code and you can test to see if any matches are left out.
