You could look through the projects on sourceforge or codeplex and find one that you might be interested in. If you are interested in gaming, there are some game engines out there that are open source, if you like databases, there are database projects etc.... Look at the bugs for the project and the source and try to fix one. If you can then send in the fix to the owners of the project. If you do that, they might invite you to join them or ask if you want to be a part of it.

If you have a pet project you could always write it and put it up on sourceforge or codeplex. This is a slow way because other people may or may not look at the project or download it at all.

There are sites like topcoder.com[^] that give you little assignments and tests to do to rank you. They also have projects that you can bid on. RentACoder.com[^] is another site where you can do little projects for others. Even if you do not get a bid you can still try to do the project on your own in some cases just to improve your skills.
