yes i quite agree . very nice engineering . unfortunately i can not figure out how software can be made to perform similarly . by the way if you favor magic i highly recommend his YouTube channel . he is quite the close up magician .

It sure is nice mechanics, but why would it be difficult to copy in software?
The sign consists of four partial images, they are each rotated around their own axis. You need to identify the four axes and the position of the partial image relative to its axis. Rotating each of the four partial images around their axes is far from rocket science software.
If you want to include the "background" rotating black gears, you have to add a couple more axes and images of the gears, but that would just be repeating the same stuff with different X/Y coordinates and image to be rotated.

please pardon my inaccuracy . i did not intend to speak of graphics but rather of design / implementation of code itself . can this mechanical concept be abstracted into software development / behavior. perhaps if class and base class are switched the resulting class behaves in the opposite manner .

I do not understand. The physical machinery rotates five graphic elements around five axes. What else would the "design / implementation of code" do but rotate five graphic elements around five axes?
Changing the look of a sign is manipulation of graphics, whether that manipulation is moving physical pieces or images of such pieces. In this case, the manipulation is rotation. The code will have to do the image rotation, just like the gears do the mechanical rotation. You have five images (with a lot of transparency) laid on top of each other, and you want to write the code to rotate those five images.

The mechanical concept is five rotating pieces, nothing more. "Abstracting" this into a base class and a subclass is (in my opinion: senseless) over-engineering.

i merely saw it as a kind of inspiration id est can one engineering discipline learn from another if for no other reason than entertainment / pastime / curiosity of no real practical use .

I have seen a simple wooden sign, it says "OPEN" or "NOPE" -- the "N" can be slid to either side of the sign.
Last fall I was thinking of a version which is circular and the "N" would be on an outer circle and would be rotated to either position.

I think it can be pretty simple if the user manually turns the outer ring, but my initial thought was to have a pull-string which rotates the outer ring back and forth.
