English born, former Professor of Computer Science at a no-longer existing college in England. Has previously lived in England, Sweden (very briefly), France (also very briefly) and Germany (six long years). Now lives in the United States where he is happily married with one son, another adopted son and a new puppy (barky and bitey - hopefully this will wear off as she gets older). Has designed and written an expert system for test flight data analysis (jet fighters - very exciting and very noisy), automated robot control systems, designed and written two specialized interpreted languages and implemented a Rexx interpreter (twice). He is now based in Maryland, USA and most recently maintained an extensive and heavily used medical and administrative intranet/extranet and associated systems using ASP.NET mostly in C# (with some old VB still hanging around) with a lot of JavaScript and various bits of SQL. Just started a new job as a G-man - will update as time goes by.

In his spare time he writes code for fun and is currently working on a simple space exploration, trading and resource management game (more to become an expert in jQuery and SVG than anything these days). Other activities include board-games and swimming for health. Past activities include Judo, fencing, archery, pistol and rifle shooting and other peaceful activities, not to mention sailing, skiing, scuba diving and riding horses, camels and elephants.

I feel comfortable on a variety of systems (UNIX, Windows, cross-compiled embedded systems, etc.) in a variety of languages, environments, and tools.
I have a particular affinity to computer language analysis, testing, as well as quality management.

More information about what I do for a living can be found at my LinkedIn Profile and on my company's web page (German only).

I discovered programming aged 11 with my school's BBC micro, and a book titled "Write your own space action games". (Their ideas of "space action" games were very different to mine. My ideas didn't include a bunch of * signs controlled via a text based menu)

I got hooked on VB for a while (mainly because I discovered I could replace the * signs with .bmp files) until someone pointed out the wonderful world of objects and Java. I also went thought a c++ phase.

I've now been a professional developer for 5 years.

My current language of choice is C#. I spend my free time playing with XNA and microcontrollers.

The beginning of my programming career was development within MS Access databases, and I learned quite a bit of VBA in those early years.

My next position was with a website building company using Classic ASP with a SQL Server backend. What was nice was that all of the sites were built on top of their own in-house CMS. I got to learn C# along the way, as some young'n built a new CMS using ASP.NET MVC with all sorts of problems and then abandoned ship. Also learned alot about optimizing code as we were pushing over 1000 websites between 2 web servers and only 1 for SQL.

I am currently a Senior Application Developer currently building/supporting multiple web portals and services using the .NET Framework as well as working with SSIS/ETL to get data from other systems types.

In my off time; I am a volunteer firefighter/first responder as well as storm spotter.

Someday, I will learn to take a break

My main goal as a developer is to improve the way software is designed, and how it interacts with the user. I like designing software best, but I also like coding and documentation. I especially like to work with user interfaces and graphics.

I have extensive knowledge of the .NET Framework, and like to delve into its internals. I specialize in working with VG.net and MyXaml. I also like to work with ASP.NET, AJAX, and DHTML.
